“Everything has to be done in style. In style.”

This is how Kim Hye-ri1 starts her story in Muyeong tap [The Shadowless Pagoda]. On stage, she is standing in front of a d curtain. She continues to speak without directly looking at either the audience or the camera:
“If anything moves first, then it has to be your mind, your eyes first. That is… the basics of a male leading role.”

The story continues; the story about how to become an Asadal; about what kind of a character he was. The mind first; the eyes first; that is how he is made, his body first; as such Asadal is a character who is in love, in agony, and who is passionately artistic, all at the same time.

In yeosung-gukgeuk (traditional Korean opera played by female actors), actresses play the role of male protagonists. It means they learn, imitate, and parody images that are considered typically male. They must re-enact in their acting the identity and similarity of the concept of male as understood through the social norms of ‘manliness.’ As emphasized by Lee Deung-woo2 in A Master Class(2010), an actress re-enacts a ‘man’ by “looking like a man,” and imitating “him.” The actress must diligently practice the ‘male’ poses and expressions. In this process the actress more than imitates manliness; the actress takes exaggerated actions in order to become a man who is more masculine than a man.

The question is, if the exaggerated poses are expressions of a man who is more masculine than a man, then where do we find the manliness of a “real man”? If the manliness of the real man cannot be justified, then perhaps the ‘pure’ masculine males are not so pure, and perhaps their manliness, too, is an imitation and parody. If that is the case, the manliness required of a man is also a socially required image, not a nature-given quality. Asadal becomes “him” not through the masculine qualities of dignity or bravery but through the qualities of being soft and flexible, and through an artistic passion. Thus just like the feminine mystique, perhaps the idea of the masculine is also a myth.

“No particular reason….if I could grow up fast, I want to be a million-dollar man like Ms. Im Chun-aeng…”

A gukgeuk actress practices and makes a parody of man endlessly, on and off the stage, to become a man; it is in fact a process of becoming something other herself. She practices the movement, the attitude, the voice, and the facial expressions; in this process, on the one hand, the feminine and the masculine dwelling inside the actress cut into each other; but on the other hand it emphasizes and makes them more pronounced. The repeated performance does not simply mean an acquisition of the traits of the opposite sex against one’s own; it is also a ‘Ritornello’, a process of physically recognizing the opposite sex within oneself and affirming it. Moreover, the actress recognizes through this process that existentially she is neither a man nor a woman; that she is a woman and a man at the same time; thus she comes to affirm herself as an individual who is whole; she “refuses to become an essentialist organism” (Gilles Deleuze) and maintains an existential status that cannot be explained with any kind of logic of inclusion and exclusion. And here lies the subversive quality of the very existence of these actresses.

>We come to a point where we can no longer interpret them with conventional wisdom only. And “at the point where the ambiguity of not being able to explain them is made is the point where their denotative possibilities open.” The body of a well-trained actress is denotive and is a denoting image before it conveys any connotive meaning. We get to look at ‘them’ without having to explain, excuse, or package in any way their image. They denote thus, but at the same time they affirm their schizophrenic subjecthood. There is no hysteria, no neurosis, and no obsession here. One cannot explain specifically the meaning of the phrase “Everything has to be done in style.” But it is indicative of their language that is inscribed in their body through practice, a language that has the absence of hysteria.

“You have a wife, but Guseuragi (nicknamed Pearl Baby) has a crush on me and keeps on visiting me. The agony, then; the agony of Asadal. She is so lovely…But the sorrows of a man who cannot say so even as he really feels it.”
Kim Hye-ri’s actions, gaze, talks, and sounds bring Asadal to the stage. In no time, the actress has transformed herself into the Asadal who is deep in sorrows. But, to be exact, Kim Hye-ri is not acting. She is on stage, but she does not act; she freely crosses the inside and outside boundary of the stage spot light. She does not make a point of looking at the audience, does not try to make an eye contact, and she does not chase after the light. She concentrates only on becoming Asadal. Here, she is neither a character analyst nor a story teller. She is Kim Hye-ri, an Asadal, an actress, a director, a woman, and a man.

The actresses in Rehearsal (2010) are on stage. But, there is no theatrical representation where what is being said and what is being shown correspond to each other. The artist, siren eun young jung knows well that there is no on- and off-stage distinction in the lives, actions, and every-day activities of these actresses. Perhaps their lives outside of the stage are even more subversive. The artist has nevertheless invited the actresses onto the stage.

The stage could be a kind of ritual space for both the artist and the actresses. For the artist, it could also mean an expression of respect and courtesy for the actresses who practice an out-dated form of popular art. The artist takes special care to present them with sensitivity. The camera movement, the dark change, the cross-over, the extension, and the close-up are all technical maneuvers on the part of the artist to avoid stereotyping the actresses. When Lee Deung-woo is magnified, it is to collapse the distance between the actress and the viewer, but not necessarily to see her more up close; it could be that the artist wants to convey her appreciation of the greatness of the actress.

It seems that through the stories they tell on the stage, the actresses come to consciously experience the value of the stories they tell. The stage is public, but to the actresses it is also the most fantastic space of reality. On the stage, the actresses tell their own story as well as that of a gukgeuk actress. On the stage, history, fact, fiction, and story are freely transposed and intermixed, and they are treated as equals. Whether it is Kim Hye-ri who becomes Asadal, or Lee Deung-woo who either tells or sings the story, history and story are not separated as facts and fiction, respectively. In other words, the conventional order of story-telling loses its power, and fiction does not mean an untruth.

The red curtain sets the tone for a sensory boundary. The deep red curtain constantly reminds the viewer that what we are watching is a stage. At the same time, the curtain that is firmly closed at all times also eliminates any illusions that a stage might bring. A stage symbolizes a space where the actresses exist in suspense; it also can be a boundary between the world and a stage; and where the illusion of the space is eliminated, it also reminds us that it is not the “personnological theatre” where the order of expected roles are represented. In this way the red curtain makes the duality of the stage visible and symbolically underscores the fact that a theatrical, or mimetic re-enactment does not take place there.

A stage event where a re-enactment does not take place is equivalent to a place which in a way creates confusion in identity. It is a place where the ambiguity of entering a relationship with a space in reality becomes visible; where the ambiguity of the relationship between actor and stage, between fictional and real characters, becomes visible. The actions of Kim Hye-ri, who moves freely in and out of the circled boundary of the stage lighting, contrasts with the fixedness of the light, and it reminds one that the customary rules and values do not apply here. Kim Hye-ri herself is oblivious to this, and Kim Hye-ri on the screen denotes this. It is precisely somewhere around here that siren eun young jung’s work escapes from remaining at an ethical or representational level. And precisely here, we meet them, those who “refuse to become an essentialist organism.”
